Here is a brief explanation of why I believe Microsoft's Windows sucks all flavours of ass.
- Windows uses various non-standard file formats and system calls which don't ever have their specifications published, making it difficult for programmers to get the most out of.
- Windows is slow.
- Windows (except NT and derivatives) is fundamentally a single user system.
- There are less holes in a slice of swiss cheese than in Window's Internet security.
- Windows XP is going to deliberately impair the sound quality of MP3s so that people start using WMA instead.
- Windows is very limited in the ways that it can be customised.
- Networking in Windows is pathetic compared with Unix-type OSes, where you can use X-Windows over a network.
- Windows is (generally speaking) much less stable than Linux.
- Windows is very expensive compared with Linux and BeOS.
- Windows has never looked (and will never look!) this good...
The picture above (click it to enlarge) shows Mandrake GNU/Linux 8.1 with X Windows at 1024*768 resolution and the Gnome desktop with an OS X theme. I'm using the Sawfish Window Manager. The programs running are The GIMP (a terrific free graphics application), XMMS (a WinAmp replacement), Nautilus (a bit like Windows Explorer) and xterm.
