Jewel (full name, Jewel Kilcher) is an Alaskan girl who moved down to LA and started (famously) living in her car and being a waitress. Eventually, she was "discovered" by her coffee shop's owner and played there a bit with her good friend Steve Poltz.
Jewel's music is mainly folky, acoustic stuff with strange stuff like yodelling thrown in, although some of her more recent stuff has been a little more rocky.
She has released two full-length albums (Pieces of You and Spirit) as well as an limited edition Christmas EP and various singles. She's also been in a couple of films and has released a book of poetry.
Jewel is probably best known for her very successful singles You Were Meant For Me and Hands.
Update: Jewel has released a new album called This Way. It kicks ass. I'll write more soon!
